Spring 2016 Beaverbox Unboxing

Beaverbox is a Canadian subscription box for women. It’s a box that comes out once a season (read: four times a year). They aim to have items in four categories: fashion, food, beauty and home, plus a little extra. It’s a bit more on the pricey side of what I normally buy, coming in at 55$ with shipping included, but I felt like splurging. I’ve had good boxes before, like the fall box. I like that this box features small Etsy companies.

Nectar Sunglasses

While these aren’t from a small Etsy business, they are pretty awesome. I’m awful for losing my sunglasses or breaking them, so having another pair is always welcome. This particular pair is in the “bombay” style. They have tortoise shell frames and have orange tinted lenses. When you’re wearing these, you can see out but other people won’t be able to see your eyes due to the reflection. Value: 30$

Lemon Juicer

This is an unbranded lemon juicer. It’s nothing super fancy, but it’s something that I didn’t already own. Value: >5$

Elle Jewels Bracelet

This is one of the classic items made by Elle Jewels. It’s a simple elephant on a chain. I like the simplicity of it. I haven’t worn it yet, but I could definitely see myself wearing it. Value: 23,95$

True Effects Hand and Skin Shield

We were given two different kinds of these hand lotion. One is scented, the other is unscented. The containers are also different. I like them both equally. I don’t find the scent to be overpowering anyway, so scented or unscented it’s all the same to me. That being said, it works very well on dry skin. Value: 16$

Stamped Birch Magnets by Birch & Ink

This month, three cute little birch tree magnets with hearts came in the box. These are too cute! I like that they’re different but that they also are pretty. These went up on my fridge right away. Value: 3$

Iced Tea Sangria by New Moon Tea Co

I’ll skip the “I hate tea” commentary this time, and go straight to the explaining. This is a one-time use packet for a pitcher of sangria of iced tea. I think it’s great that it came with the bag for the tea, as some people may not have an infuser pitcher or tea bag. I gave this to a neighbor who seemed very happy with it. Value: 4.99$

Overall, I received a value of 80$, not including shipping prices for the Etsy items. This value was much higher than the fall box, and mostly due to the sunglasses/bracelet. I think that it’s an interesting concept and I am so impressed that this is a Canadian company. While I often look for high values in subscription boxes, with this one being more of a discovery of Canadian companies (and often small ones, at that!), I am ok with getting close to what I paid. Since the subscription fee includes shipping in it, I still think that this is a fair value. I definitely plan on keeping this subscription up as I like the discovery aspect of it and where it is only 4 time a year, it doesn’t hurt the wallet as much.

What do you think? Would you order this one?

L’Oréal Hydra Total 5 VoxBox

I was lucky enough to receive on of the L’oréal Hydra Total 5 voxboxes from Influenster not too long ago and I have finally reached my verdict on the products! Before I dig into my review, I’d just like to mention that I received this product in exchange for an honest review. Now that that little disclaimer is out of the way, onto the product!

I received the Hydra Total 5 Ultra-Fresh routine which came with a cleanser, a toner and a moisturizer. The Ultra-Fresh line is for oilier skin, which I definitely can have.

Hydra Total 5 Ultra Fresh Gel Cleanser

This is a gel cleanser that has five different things that it is designed to do. It is supposed to cleanse, remove impurities, refresh, tighten pores and brighten the skin.

I found that it cleansed my skin well, but that I definitely needed a moisturizer afterward. I’m not used to using products with alcohol in it and it did dry out my cheek area. That being said, it is amazing for acne breakouts. Those blasted little pimples didn’t stand a chance against this stuff.

Hydra Total 5 Ultra Fresh Toner

This is the second step of the routine, after the gel cleanser and before the gel-cream. This toner has the job of toning, removing impurities, refreshing the skin, tightening pores and smoothing the skin.

I definitely felt this having an effect on my skin. It made it tingle and feel cool to the touch. I found it also helped remove stray bits of makeup that my cleanser didn’t quite get. I think it’s a decent toner and works well paired with the other products in the ultra-fresh line.

Hydra Total 5 Ultra-Fresh Gel-Cream Moisturizer

This is the third step of the routine, after the cleanser and toner. This step is supposed to provide all day moisture, revitalize, refresh and soften the skin, as well as tone.

I really like the smell of this product. It just smells so refreshing! I found that this isn’t a heavy moisturizer. It would be perfect for the hot summer months when the last thing you want is to slather on some thick cream to moisturize your poor skin. I really had to slather this on to help my poor winter weary skin stay moisturized. In this case, I think the alcohol ingredients are fighting the moisturizing ingredients and preventing adequate moisture.

I like the simplicity of this routine. Three steps and you’re done. I think that for my skin (combination where I have an oily t-zone and chin and dryer cheeks), this would be the answer for the summer months and probably isn’t the best choice for the winter when the temperature can be -20C one day and 10C the next. I think that this line (and the other two lines in this series) are good drug store options that really underline the importance of multi-step skincare.

Have you tried this line? What did you think?

The Kit Beauty Box Unboxing

The Kit Beauty Box is a one-time purchase box from the makers of Topbox. It costs 45$ (with free shipping everywhere in Canada except the territories) and claims to have over 200$ worth of products in it. This kit is filled with a lot of drugstore brands, many of which I’ve never tried. Since these products would be a lot easier to get if I decided that I love them than my normal fare, I needed this.

Flashforward to yesterday, and I get a delivery notification from Canada post. (Always my favorite kind of email.) I actually got this BEFORE I got a notice from Topbox that it shipped. I’m definitely not complaining because this arrived very quickly and had oodles of goodies for me to dig through.

This box came with a fold out item card and was very well packed in bubble wrap (for breakable items) and tissue papers. I’m happy to report that all items made it to me safe and sound. (This post also marks the first post done with my new phone/ new camera. It’s amazing what a difference a few megapixels can make.)

Without further ado, let’s get to unboxing! I’ll be doing multiple items per picture, because otherwise that’s 20+ pictures.

Covergirl Colorlicious Lipstick in Succulent Cherry

This deliciously rich lipstick is infused with shea butter for lasting coloring and comes in 36 shades you can’t help but crave.

I actually received this once before, from another topbox. Since I have a mostly full tube, I know the perfect person to give this to since it’s actually a really nice color and formula.

Covergirl Full Lash Bloom Mascara By Lashblast in Very Black

Achieve a runway ready look by curling your fringe, then applying two coats of this volumizing mascara.

I’m actually currently using a tube of this that I got awhile back, from another Topbox coincidentally.  I like this formula and I’m actually happy to see it. With subscription boxes, mascara isn’t something I ever seem to run out of.

Essie Nail Laquer in Toggle to the Top

This is one of the easiest ways to get in the spirit without going over the top– plus, it’s gorgeous.

I really like Essie nail polish but I really can’t justify spending the full price in drug stores. I don’t have any colors in my expansive nail polish collection, so I’m pretty happy to see this.

Ceramic Glaze Nail Lacquer in Sorcery

Long lasting shine, highly pigmented shades. Apply 2 coats for gorgeous nails.

I’d never heard of this company before this. It’s apparently a brand that’s exclusive to Shopper’s Drug Mart stores. There are over 20 colors in their collection and is said to be chip resistant.

2016-01-16 10.57.17

Medusa’s Makeup Eyeshadow in Black Gold

Highly pigmented mineral pressed powder with micro sparkles. For best results, apply “Stick it” primer then apply with brush.

I feel like this would be a great smoky eye color. I don’t do that often, but this would be good to have on hand.

NYX Baked Shadow in Smoke & Mirrors

Use with dry eyeshadow base. Great to apply wet or dry. Apply choice of colors to create edgy, natural and artistic eye looks.

Another fun, and smoky color. I wonder how this would look with the other one.

Ofra Universal Eyebrow Pencil

Can be applied directly to the eyebrow area then smudge genty with a small brush or brow wand applicator. Use a light hand with soft feather strokes for blonde brows/fair skin and a heavier hand for a darker brow.

I don’t really use a brow pencil but I wonder if I should.

Sally Hansen Dry & Go Drops

A fast nail polish dryer to prevent smudges and dings.

This was actually an either/or product. The other option was a cuticle eraser and balm. I’m very happy to get this drying drops since waiting for polish to dry isn’t fun.

OGX Nourishing Coconut Milk Shampoo

Let this antioxidant-rich shampoo take you to a tropical paradise with each use. With coconut and egg white proteins, this wonder cocktail works to bring out your hair’s natural strength, while boosting shine.

Herbal Essences Rejuvenating Shampoo and Conditioner

Strengthening shampoo cleanses for smooth, healthy-looking hair. Lather, rinse and use our Wild Naturals Rejuvenating Conditioner to experience a perfect pairing.

Moisturizing conditioner that deeply nurtures and restores your hair’s vitality. Massage in and rinse.

I’ve actually done an in-depth review of this a few months ago. You can read the full review here. A short recap: I love the scent, this product works well with my hair and it makes my hair shiny.

Redken Frizz Dismiss Fly-Away Fix Finishing Sheets

This big beauty trend is one we can get behind! The new REDKEN Frizz Dismiss dryer-like sheets utilize lavender oil to help tame frizz and flyaways in one easy, smooth inducing application.

This seems like a great winter product! I have hair that loooooves to frizz up and having to wear scarves and hats doesn’t help that at all.

Redken Braid Aid 03 Braid Defining Lotion

Add grip and smooth out strands while you’re twisting and braiding your way through each music festival this summer.

Braids aren’t only for summer! I use braids to keep my hair from bugging me on days when I just can’t deal with it.

Pantene Expert Pro-V Advanced + Keratin Repair Split End Fuser

Specially crafted for those who seek an exceptional level of care to treat their damaged hair. Gentle enough for those who color.

This is another repeat for me, once again from a Topbox. I’m totally ok with that because this is a decent product and I will use it.

Burt’s Bees Facial Cleansing Towelettes with White Tea Extract

A soothing clean you can unwind to. Specially crafted for normal to dry skin. Remove makeup, cleanse, and tone in one easy step, leaving skin naturally clean without the need for rinsing.

While I don’t often use wipes, I’m definitely okay with having them. I like to use them for travel when I can’t bring along my actual involved skin care routine.

Biore Deep Cleansing Charcoal Pore Strips

Remove weeks (yes-weeks!) worth of pore gunk with just one strip. Leaves skin feeling fresh, clean and 3x less oily.

Well, at least they don’t specifically say blackheads since they’ll mostly remove sebaceous filaments. I can’t help but love pore strips. I know they don’t do much, but I love them.

Avon Anew Power Serum

Apply daily on clean, dry skin in the morning and evening before using your preferred moisturizer,.

MaskerAide Hydrating Facial Sheet Mask- I Don’t Wanna Grow Up

MaskerAide is a unique line of super hydrating facial sheet masks created for fabulous lifestyles.

This is a new thing for me. Usually, I use Korean branded masks, but I am definitely game to try this one.

Eslor Introductory Collection

The Eslor Introductory Collection contains 4 of our best products to provide you with a complete skincare regimen. Start with our soothing cleanser and refiner, next, the Botanical Peeling Gel. Follow with the Chlorophyll Lifting Mask and finally, apply our Firming Collagen Day Cream.

I know that I’ve gotten this before, but I can’t remember where or if I liked it.

Belvada Tweezers

Never slip again with these unique and colourful grip tweezers that fit perfectly into any purse or handbag.

Not exciting, but useful. I can always use a good pair of tweezers.

Joico Flip Turn Volumizing Finishing Spray

Noted in our One-Minute Miracle digital issue as a Beauty Game Changer, this new technology from Joico means you can give your hair volume and hold from every angle.

I don’t always need volume, but this could help when I do.

Vaseline Intensive Care Spray Moisturizer- Cocoa Radiant

Calms and soothes discomfort by combining moisturization and SPF protection in a refreshing, fast-absorbing format.

So this is really fun. It makes moisturizing so easy. It also smells nice, but I can’t quite determine what that smell is.

Olay Regenerist Wrinkle Revolution Complex

Instantly reduces the appearance of wrinkles and smoothes skin texture and allows makeup to go on smoothly.

Meh. Not something I’m into. I need to figure out who to pass these onto.

Burt’s Bees Lip Shimmer

An all-over thin coat of Burt’s Bees Lip Shimmer creates the illusion of fuller lips.

I like Burt’s Bees products, and yet, for some reason, I never buy them myself. Go figure.

Olay Ultra Moisture With Shea Butter Body Wash

We know that supple, touchable skin starts in the shower. For a luxuriously foamy shower that also quenches thirsty limbs.

It’s travel size, which is fine by me. I like having these on hand for traveling.

2016-01-15 15.26.25

I am definitely impressed by this selection. Looking at even just a few items at the drug store, and I already would have gone past the 45$ that I paid. This box is definitely worth it. I checked out what I could on Well.ca (an online drug store in Canada that has prices similar to actual drug stores) and with only being able to add 10 items to my cart, I already surpassed 75$. I also know that Redken items are usually pretty pricey.  I am so happy with this and I would definitely get one of these boxes next time they come out.

What do you think? Let me know!

Friday Fave: 15/01/2016

Well, this isn’t technically a “Friday” Fave. I spent the past week either at work or sleeping trying to get rid of an awful cold. So hopefully, it’s okay that this Friday Fave is coming out on a Saturday.

2015-02-09 16.14.22
This pic is actually from when I opened my Beauteque bag.

This week, I am going to share my current (and favorite for Winter!) toner. The Secret Key Milk Brightening Toner. I actually received this last year in a Beauteque bag. I put off using it initially since I had another on the go, and then again because it was summer and the last thing I felt I needed was more moisture on my oily face.

If you’re new to toners, this is the first step after cleansing. This isn’t like a toner you often see in a drugstore in USA or Canada. It’s not going to dry out your face since it’s job is to help prep the skin for the upcoming steps in your skincare routine. It can also remove the last bit of dirt/makeup on your face, if there’s any left after cleaning. I use a cotton pad with some of this on it and smooth it on my face. I let it dry before going on to the next step. It feels very smooth on my skin and dries with no noticeable residue.

So why is this so great? First and foremost, it doesn’t contain any alcohols. While alcohols can be okay sometimes, it’s not something you want when you have mega dry skin due to cold winds and changing temperatures. (This has been helping my skin so much these past few weeks. Winter, I kind of hate you right now.)  It also has milk protein extract, which is simply fantastic for your skin. The secret (ha!) of this toner is that the ingredients help get rid of dead, dull and dry skin cells, which help make your skin brighter and moisturized.

Ingredients: Milk Protein Extract, Glycerine, 1,2-Hexanediol, Green Tea Extract, Soybean Extract, Tomato Berry/Stem/Leaf Extract, Raspberry Extract, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Extract, Solanum Tuberosum (Potato) Pulp Extract, Daucus Carota Sativa (Carrot) Root Extract, Zanthoxylum Piperitum Fruit Extract, Hydroxyethyl cellulose, Cucumber Extract, Pumpkin Extract, Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate, Usnea Barbata (Lichen) Extract, Pulsatilla Koreana Flower Extract, Disodium EDTA, Fragrance (source)

You’ll also notice that this toner doesn’t contain some other rather harmful ingredients. Namely, parabens, mineral oils, phenoxyethanol, benzophenone and animal oils.

If you like what you’ve read and are wondering where you can get this, there are a few different options online. You can check out Secret Key (They are buy 1, get 1), Tester Korea currently has ever toner in this line except the milk one, and Beauty Net Korea. You can also likely find it on Ebay.

Have you tried this toner? Do you love it as much as I do? Let me know!

Friday Fave: 08/01/2016

This week’s Friday Fave isn’t one thing. It’s a bunch of things. I’m a lover of masks and one of my favorite brands of masks is My Beauty Diary. I have oodles of these on hand (mostly due to a really great sale I stumbled upon in the summer (only 2,50$ a box of 10!!)) and I simply love them! My Beauty Diary is a Taiwanese company and you can find a lot of their products online. I’ve also noticed that many Loblaws stores have started carrying them, so for those of you in Canada, that might be a good place to start.

I currently have seven different types of these masks in large quantities. I’ll be going through my top 3. As for some general awesomeness… All of the MBD masks that I’ve tried have been thoroughly saturated with essence and adhere well to my face. They’re a little long under my chin, but that just means that I wrap it under and give my neck/chin some TLC. I also love the cute little packages. Which has nothing to do with the product inside, but it does make me want to use it more.

Mexico Cactus Mask

This is a mask for hydration and moisturization. And let me tell you. In my experience, it definitely does. Every single time I’ve used one of these, I’ve been left with super soft and moisturized skin. This mask contains Vitamin C to help with moisturizing and to keep skin supple.  I guess this mask being a hydrating mask makes sense. Cacti are where a lot of water/liquid is found in a desert.

Ingredients (on packaging): Water, Glycerin, Butylene Glycol, Propylene Glycol, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Morus Nigra Fruit Extract, Chondrus Crispus (Carrageenan) Extract, Ginkgo Biloba Leaf Extract, Glycyrrhiza Glabra (Licorice) Root Extract, Phenoxyethanol, Chlorphenesin, Triethanolamine, Laminara Digitata Extract, Hydrolyzed Yeast Protein, Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract, Centella Asiatica Extract, Opuntia Streptacantha Flower Extract, Phoenix Dactylifera (Date) Fruit Extract, Polysorbate 20, Fragrance, Acer Saccharum (Sugar Maple) Extract, Citric Acid, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Fruit Extract, Citrus Medica Limonum (Lemon) Peel Extract, Malva Sylvestris (Mallow) Flower Extract, Saccharum Officinarum (Sugar Cane) Extract, Hydroxyethyl Urea, Polyglutamic Acid, Sodium pca, Codium Tomentosum Extract, Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate, Lecithin, Polysorbate 80, peg-15 Hydroxystearate, Sodium Hyaluronate, Carbomer, Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate, Xanthan Gum, Sodium Hydroxide, Fragrance, Glycosphingolipids, Tocopherylacetate.

Imperial Bird’s Nest

This is another mask that has hydration and skin nourishment as its claim. With winter being rather brutal to my skin, it’s really not surprising that these type of mask are some of my go-to products. At first, it was really weird to think about putting something contain bird’s nest on my face, but I found I quickly got over that. This mask is made with ingredients like bird’s nest, collagen, corraline, and sugar maple.

Ingredients (packaging)water, glycerin, propylene glycol, butylene glycol, phenoxethanol, sodium lactate, chlorphenesin, triethanolamine, polysorbate 20, sodium hyaluronate, xanthan gum, citric acid, hydroxyethyl urea, adansona digitata pulp extract, algae extract, avena sativa (oat) kernel extract, hydrolyzed swiftlet nest, kappaphycus alvarezii extract, laminaria digitata extract, lecithin, centella asiatica extract, codium tomentosum extract, cichorium intybus (chicory) leaf extract, dipotassium glycyrrhizate, hydrolyzed rice protein, magnesium gluconate, hydrolyzed soy protein, aloe barbadensis leaf juice, gentiana lutea root extract, maltose, polysorbate 80, malva sylvestris (mallow) flower extract, saccharum officinarum (sugar cane) extract, acer saccharum (sugar maple) extract, citrus aurantium dulcis (orange) fruit extract, citrus medica limonum (lemon) peel extract, PEG-15 hydroxystearate, carbomer, iodopropynyl butylcarbamate, polyglutamic acid, sodium hydroxide, fragrance (parfum), glycosphingolipids, tocopheryl acetate.

Sake Yeast Mask

This is a mask for whitening, brightening, and moisturizing. It’s for all skin types and is also said to be anti-aging, regenerating and softening (partially due to the collagen). Sake is a Japanese style of rice wine and this particular sake is brewed with deep ocean water. I had one of these on the other day and my face was a lot smoother and less dry after the fact.

IngredientsWater, Glycerin, Butylene Glycol, Propylene Glycol, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Rice Ferment Filtrate (Sake), Cereus Grandiflorus (Cactus) Flower Extract,Citrus Medica Mimonum (Lemon) Peel Extract,  Phenoxyethanol Citrus Grandis (Grapefruit) Fruit Extract, Chlorphenesin, Triethanolamine, Laminaria Digitata Extract, Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract, Centella Asiatica Extract, Glycyrrhiza Glabra (Licorice) Root Extract, Polysorbate 20, Sodium Lactate, Sarothamnus Scoparius Extract, Sodium Hyaluronate Citric Acid, Hydroxyethyl Urea, Xantham Gum, Codium Tomentosum Extract, Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate, Hydrolyzed Rice Protein, Lecithin, Malva Sylvestris (Mallow) Flower Extract, Saccharum Officium (Sugar Cane) Extract, Acer Saccharum (Sugar Maple) Extract, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Fruit Extract, Polysorbate 80, Peg-15 Hydroxystearate, Carbomer, Parfum,  Sodium Hydroxide, Iodopropnyl Butylcarbamate Glycosphingolipids, Tocopheryl Acetate

I also regularly use the Arbutin (Brightening and Freshening), Lemon Vit-C (Brightening and Luminosity), Natto (Moisturizing and Tightening) and Collagen (Firming for intense plumpness). I just really, really, really love these masks. I’ve only had good experiences with them and I want to try to get my hands on some of the other types that are available (once I make it through more of my stash). The next one I think I am going to try to find is the Apple.

Have you tried My Beauty Diary Masks? Do you love them as much as I do? Let me know!

Friday Fave: 01/01/2016

It’s time for Friday Faves! Since it’s January 1st, it’s the perfect time to start the year off right. This week, I’ll be reviewing The Saem Healing Tea Garden Cleansing Water in Tea Tree. I received this back in September in my Beauteque monthly bag.

2015-12-29 12.35.40

Cleansing waters seem to be all the rage right now. I can definitely understand why. They’re perfect for when you’re feeling a little lazy and need a quick clean, or when you need to take off some makeup. I like to use it in the morning to remove my night time skin care. I just don’t have the patience at a ridiculously early hour to do a full cleanse. I’m barely coherent enough to make coffee at that point. They’re also great because they don’t need to be washed off.

This cleansing water features tea tree from Australia. It has three major claims. It claims to remove makeup in one go while still leaving skin moisturized, removes excess sebum and impurities and doesn’t irritate the skin. This type of product is designed to be used with a cotton ball or pad. The cotton needs to be saturated and then you can start dragging it over your skin, going outwards. The product doesn’t contain artificial pigments, synthetic fragrances, benzophenones, parabens, animal ingredients, mineral oils or talc.

I’ve decided to test this product out as a part of this review. I already know that I quite enjoy it. But how does it stack up against some heavy duty cosmetics.

Here are the products used:

1) Urban Dollkiss Easylooks Soft Lipsticks in 04 2) Tonymoly Auto Lip Liner in 04 3) Skinfood Seaweed Mineral Waterproof Eyeshadow Stick 4) It’s Skin It’s Top Professional Fix Gel Eyeliner in 01 5) Etude House Color Pop 6) Secret Key Holic Pigment Glitter 7) It’s Skin Babyface Waterproof Eyeliner 8) Skinfood Choco Eyebrow Powder Cake

The top picture is after one swipe. The picture on the left-hand side is after 3 swipes and the final picture is after some serious scrubbing. That being said, I’d never put on eyeliner that thick. Given the staying power of some of these products, I’m actually pleasantly surprised. I don’t wear heavy makeup, so I haven’t had any issues. But, it’s nice to know that if I decided that I needed some heavy duty eyeliner, that this could likely handle it.

Sadly, I only have about 1/3 of a bottle left of this lovely, lovely stuff. It’s surprisingly hard to find at a price that won’t make me cry… plus not having ridiculous shipping to Canada. So even though I love it, I won’t be buying another bottle anytime soon unless I can find it at a reasonable price. I also have two bottles of different cleansing waters en route from The Face Shop.

Have you tried this product? What did you think? Let me know!

New Series: Friday Faves

It’s no secret that I’ve been a huge slacker this past while. I have so many unpublished and half-done posts. It’s shameful. With 2016 just around the corner, I’m starting a new series that will guarantee a weekly post as well as share some of my fave things/products. I will still be doing unboxing posts, but this will just be in addition to it.

So, before I embark on this journey, I have to ask. Any products that you’d like to see?

Let me know what you think!
